Climate Action Project – Kitchen Garden Workshop at Dunmore Country School

On a dry bright Spring morning, Laois PPN were delighted to present a Kitchen Garden Workshop” at Dunmore Country School, Durrow, Co. Laois. The “Environmentally & Sustainability” themed workshop was hosted by nationally recognised Tanguy de Toulgeot.

The Dunmore Country School is home to a garden that is both beautiful and practical. Located just outside Durrow, County Laois it aims to help people grow tasty vegetables in a sustainable, intensive, and cost-effective way. The school offers quality gardening courses that are practical, easy to follow and enjoyable.

This special garden has achieved national recognition featuring in the Irish Times and Irish Independent as well as Jane Powers’ book ‘The Living Garden’. Dunmore Country School has also featured on RTE’s Nationwide and Dermot’s Secret Garden.

Tanguy warmly welcomed Laois PPN Members Groups and over the course of the day attendees learned how to grow tasty vegetables, fruit & herbs in a sustainable, intensive, and cost-effective way using time proven French traditional techniques. Community Groups also learned about traditional gardening methods that they can bring back to their own Communities and homes.

Dunmore features a garden with a polytunnel and is based on the traditional French “potager”, or kitchen garden. The garden produces almost all the vegetables and herbs needed for the year and uses flowers as part of its rotation system, which is both beautiful and practical.

The garden employs a no dig system where mulching is used as a method to build up organic matter on the beds.

Attendees on the day were treated to coffee and delicious pancakes served with accompaniments from the Kitchen Garden.

Dan Bergin Laois PPN Co – Ordinator said, “Laois PPN wish to thank Tanguy for sharing his knowledge and expertise, the workshop was part of our Climate Action Project. PPN Member Groups thoroughly enjoyed the workshop with Tanguy – where they learned a wide variety of methods and techniques that are both environmentally friendly and sustainable, which they can bring back to their own Communities.”
